Project overview

Xiaowei is Tencent’s voice-based service available on smart speaker devices from Tencent and third-party device manufacturers. With Xiaowei, you can build natural voice experiences by a more intuitive way to interact with the technology we use every day. Xiaowei includes a collection of tools, APIs, reference solutions, and documentation to make it easier to build for developers.

My work focus on two parts:

0. Improving the user experience by rebuilding the connection progress between the phone and the device.

1. Xiaowei Skills Kit platform: For third-party developers to launch their own skills that can be used in service.

2. Design basic skills and personality for Xiaowei voice service for third-party device manufacturers to integrate into their products.

Doing tests to our voice experience design is kind of like a drama play rehearsal. Everyone sounds like an actor.

We really went through a hard time to decide which is the best persona for our little assistant.

Xiaowei Skills Kit

The Xiaowei Skills Kit is a collection of self-service APIs, tools, documentation, and code samples that makes it easier to start building Xiaowei skills. Skills are like apps for Xiaowei, enabling users to perform everyday tasks or engage with the content naturally with voice.

I did the research of other voice services and made our user journey map to use our official website.

1. Let the developers build it themselves

2.Let them fill in the template to build easier and quicker.

Xiaowei voice assistant

The voice assistant includes basic skills that can be directly used when embedded SDK, which includes 11 different blueprints.

I designed 3 basic skill blueprint that can be used combined with the huge Tencent ecosystem.

major takeaways

  • Suitable is a key - designing for professional users is far more different from normal users. across the globe, it is important to make sure our platform adapt to different users’ need from the variation.

  • Prioritization - in a fast-moving environment like Wechat, spend time and limited resources most efficiently is one of the crucial skills that I learned over the internship that helped me achieve my goals.

  • Think & act beyond - always be proactive when seeking for the next opportunity to grow and drive impact.
